About vodka
What it is
A spirit distilled to take character out rather than put it in. That is the point of it, and it is why vodka carries other ingredients so cleanly.
Where it came from
Poland and Russia both claim it, from somewhere around the eighth to the eleventh century, and neither claim is settleable. It was medicine long before it was a drink, which is where the name comes from: a diminutive of the Slavic word for water.
Worth knowing
The base material matters less than people expect, but it is not nothing. Rye is peppery, wheat is soft and slightly sweet, potato is oily and full in the mouth, grape is light. Filtration is the other lever, and heavy charcoal filtering strips out what little is left. In a Martini you will notice the difference; in a Moscow Mule you will not.
