What cocktail can I make?Where it came from
It seems to have started with Americans abroad during the Second World War, who mixed neutral spirit with orange juice in places such as Turkey and China. The name was in use in Ankara by 1943, and in 1949 Time described drinkers at Istanbul's Park Hotel taking 'the latest Yankee concoction of vodka and orange juice'. The popular story that someone stirred it with a screwdriver for want of a spoon has never been pinned to anyone. In America it rose with the vodka boom of the 1950s.
