Bitter Giuseppe
A Manhattan built on Cynar, the artichoke amaro, so it is bittersweet and low in alcohol. A little lemon juice keeps it bright.
What's in it
- 60ml (2 oz) Cynar
- 30ml (1 oz) Sweet vermouth
- 7.5ml (¼ oz) Lemon juice
- 6 dashes Orange bitters
- 1 Lemon twist optional
How to make it
- Fill a rocks glass with ice.
- Stir the Cynar, sweet vermouth, lemon juice and orange bitters with ice in a mixing glass.
- Strain over the fresh ice and express a lemon twist over the top.

What cocktail can I make?Where it came from
Stephen Cole created it at The Violet Hour in Chicago; Difford's Guide dates it to 2007, while other records give 2009. Cole has said the idea came when an Italian chef he knew came into the bar and he thought the man would like a Cynar Manhattan, which is where the name comes from, not, as is sometimes assumed, from the bartender Giuseppe Gonzalez.
