Hot Toddy

Whisky, honey, lemon and hot water. The name comes from a palm-sap drink of 17th-century India, and Scotland and Ireland made it their winter cure.

What cocktail can I make?

Where it came from

By 1786 'toddy' meant a drink of spirits with hot water, sugar and spices. The usual account has the British taking the word home from India, with pubs in the cold, damp north pouring hot water into whisky and the India trade supplying the spices. A later version is tied to the Irish physician Robert Bentley Todd, who prescribed hot brandy with cinnamon, sugar and water, though the word itself is older. The drink crossed to the American colonies with rum and local brandy, and by the mid-19th century Americans treated it as a remedy for colds.
