What Mixel Premium costs, and what Barello does instead

Barello is a home cellar and bar app that tells you what to open tonight, what to keep, and what you can mix from what you have. That's cocktails and wine both, in one place. Mixel is a cocktail app on its own: a big recipe library, a social feed and an AI bartender chat, sold as a subscription.

Mixel Premium is $2.99 a month or $22.99 a year, and working out what you can make from what you own isn't behind it. That part is free in Mixel, the same as it is here.

Mixel's price and feature list were read off its own upgrade screen on 18 September 2026. Its ratings, 83 in Australia, 1,530 in the US and 85 in Britain, come from the App Store, read 21 September 2026. It's been live since 2017.

What you get instead with Barello

The wine sits in the same household inventory as the spirits, so the shelf that says what cocktail you can make also says which bottle of wine is ready tonight.

Every wine carries a drinking window that adjusts for where you keep it: a shelf in a warm kitchen runs faster than a wine fridge, and the dates move to match.

Vermouth, aperitifs and liqueurs fade once they're open. Barello notes when one's been open long enough to taste before you pour it neat, on the same shelf that does the matching.

Give a bottle a price and a size and it works out what a nip costs, so a spirit you sip and one you mix sit on the same list, priced.

It's one shelf the household shares, not a private list on one phone. It's free to use. Here's what joining early gets you.

What Premium buys

Exactly four things, in Mixel's own words: the full recipe library, unlimited synced notes and photos, social features, themes, and Bart, an AI bartender chat.

So the honest comparison isn't free versus paid on the same feature. It's two different products that happen to share one function. Mixel's subscription buys recipe breadth and a social layer on top of it, and none of that is what Barello sells or does.

What Mixel does well

Its library is the real thing: 2,600 recipes, a social feed to compare notes with, and an AI chat if you'd rather ask a bartender than search for the answer yourself. If what you want is a big book of cocktails you didn't have to build, that's a fair reason to pay for it. It isn't the job Barello does.

What Barello doesn't do

No social feed, no themes, no AI chat. If comparing notes with other people, or asking a bot for a recipe, is the point for you, Mixel does that and this doesn't.

Questions people ask

What does Mixel Premium cost?

$2.99 a month, or $22.99 a year after a three-day trial. It buys four things in Mixel's own words: the full recipe library, unlimited synced notes and photos, social features, themes and Bart, the AI bartender chat. Read off Mixel's own upgrade screen, September 2026.

Free alternative to Mixel cocktail app

Barello. It's free to use, and the cocktail matching costs nothing in either app. What Barello adds is the wine: one household inventory, with drinking windows that move to match where you keep the bottle.

Is inventory matching free in Mixel?

Yes. Mixel's Premium buys the recipe library, social, themes and the AI bartender chat. The matching itself, working out what you can make from your own bottles, was never part of that deal.

What does Barello do that Mixel doesn't?

It keeps the wine in the same inventory as the spirits, with a drinking window that adjusts for where you store the bottle, and a note when an opened vermouth or aperitif is fading. Mixel doesn't do wine at all.

See your own shelf do this. About thirty seconds to join, one photo per bottle, and it's free to use.
