Buck's Fizz

Sparkling wine and orange juice, two to one, so it drinks drier than a Mimosa. Usually credited to Buck's Club in London, around 1921.

A Buck's Fizz

What's in it

How to make it

  1. Pour the orange juice into a chilled flute.
  2. Top slowly with the sparkling wine, tilting the glass so it doesn't foam over.

What cocktail can I make?

Where it came from

Buck's Club in Mayfair opened in June 1919, named after its founder, Captain Herbert 'Buck' Buckmaster of the Royal Horse Guards, and its first barman, Malachi 'Pat' McGarry, is credited with the drink. Firm evidence is thin, and the Buck's Fizz doesn't reach a cocktail book until The Savoy Cocktail Book of 1930. Frank Meier's 1936 book, from the Ritz in Paris, was the first to list it beside the Mimosa, which is usually credited to Meier, although his own book makes no such claim.
